Stop Body Shaming: Learn how to love your body

Bodyshaming can take many different forms. This includes not only statements regarding alleged too much fat (“fat shaming”), but also too little fat (“skinny shaming”).

What is body shaming?

Too fat, too skinny, too old, not pretty – body shaming still is a topic in our society. But what is meant by body shaming?

It is the social exclusion, discrimination or even bullying based on physical characteristics. The main problem is that it is not even a matter of whether the person is actually suffering from being overweight or underweight. It simply is a matter of social perception of what an ideal woman should look like.

Unfortunately, this issue starts very early. It’s sad but true: half of all girls in first to third grade are sure that their ‘ideal weight’ is below their actual weight. It is frightening that six-year-old girls are not only aware of their weight, but also convinced that something is wrong with it. In adulthood, the situation is even more shocking: according to surveys, 80 to 90% of women are not happy with their bodies. But why is that? Why do we keep doubting ourselves?

Instead of Body Shaming we want to support Body Faming: That means the love for your own body. You should appreciate and love your body – because you are great the way you are. So free yourself from any ideals of society and go your own way.

Different forms of body shaming

The most common form of Body Shaming – and here lies the main problem – is self-shaming. Being ashamed of your own body and looking at your own reflection with hatred, sadness or rejection. We torture ourselves with diets, our bodies with sports for no end. We forget to enjoy life and are only focused on whether we look good and what our actions do to our body.

And all because a little voice in our head is constantly nagging at us: be skinnier, more sporty, more attractive – be perfect! But being perfect is just boring! It is especially the small imperfections that make us what we are!

Other forms of Body Shaming refer to age-related characteristics, disabilities, skin lesions and much more. In the end, it is about every possible body part that does not correspond to the given ideal and is labeled as insufficient.

The roots of body shaming

Where does this ideal image come from that we constantly try to follow? Advertising tells us that only thin models are happy and successful. In social media, influencers always present themselves in the most perfect light and the ideal position. They edit their pictures to look perfect and thus bias our idea of reality.

Many women are ashamed of their bodies because they don’t match those of these ‘role models’. But that is exactly the point: this perfection does not correspond to reality and should not be the measure of all things. Be yourself, be your own reality with your own body and with all its rough edges. How? We tell you.

Learn how to love your body

Do you accept yourself and your body? Are you your 1st priority? The solution to almost all body shaming problems is self-love. Loving yourself includes self-acceptance, self-esteem, and self-reflection.

This is what self-love is all about and what we need to learn. We need to love, accept and value ourselves as we would our best friend. You should be the most important person in your life. Do not confuse love for yourself with selfishness or even narcissism. You will not forget your fellow humans, even if you learn to be your own priority.

But if you accept your body and are at peace with yourself, you won’t be put off by body shaming. These are things to keep in mind if you want to get on the path to loving your body more starting today.

1. Know your worth

You are you!

You are enough!

You are perfect the way you are!

The magic word on the way to more satisfaction with your own body is self-esteem. Know your worth and don’t let anyone tell you that there is something wrong with you. Neither from other people nor from any beauty ideals or trends. Once you gained the understanding that you and your body are wonderful, you know your worth and no one can touch you anymore.

2. Be thankful

Your body is doing an amazing job! It was born, has grown and has changed. It carries you every day, gives you support and security. Our body is our faithful companion, so we should treat it as such!

Be grateful for everything that your body has gone through with you so far – a few scars or signs of aging are completely normal and only show you how strong you are. Be grateful and your body will accompany you reliably in the future.

3. Don’t compare yourself to others

This could be one of the most important and essential points we should keep in mind: Don’t compare yourself to others! Every person is different and that’s a good thing. How boring would our beautiful world be if every person looked the same? Exactly! Pretty boring.

We need diversity. Moreover: If we always want to be like others, we have no chance to be happy at all. You can only reach this goal if you are satisfied with yourself, your body and all its edges. And you know what? You definitely can be.

4. Accept your body

Yes, you can be happy with your body – no matter if you are tall, short, slim or strong. Because your body belongs to you the way it is and you should accept it the same way. Try to free yourself from all the ideal images.

And if you then listen deep inside yourself and block out all the superficial things in your environment, you will feel how grateful your body is to you that you accept it as it is. Become one with yourself, with your body and with nature. You will thank yourself very soon.

Self Love Challenge

A great first step into this acceptance is to make a list. Write down everything you love about your body. It doesn’t have to be just the outward appearances either! Maybe you are rarely sick or have a lot of strength. Or maybe you can rely on your body when you feel completely exhausted and it still works.

Just write everything down and look at this list again and again. You will see that it reminds you over and over what a strong person you are – and that too in a super strong body.

To sum it up – let’s ditch body shaming

Body Shaming is something that unfortunately still is a topic to many women in everyday life. But we women should encourage each other and push our self-confidence. Only with a sense of self-esteem and acceptance for our bodies we can stop body Shaming and start BODY FAMING – the love for our bodies.

It’s clear that this won’t happen overnight. It’s perfectly okay that it will take a while. But always remember: you are much more than your body. What is in your heart is your inner beauty and your nature – your body only encloses your personality. We should always be grateful for it and never be ashamed.
